Android made a timid entry in Japan as early as 2009 and since then, its progress has been unstoppable, mainly due to the enormous efforts of NTT DOCOMO. During fiscal year (FY) 2010 almost 5 million Android devices were sold in Japan; more than half of them ended up on the hands of NTT DOCOMO customers.
As part of the push for Android, NTT DOCOMO has introduced a very ambitious plan for bringing the best content from the most popular developers to our customers. This strategy involves the creation of the "docomo market," a portal that comes pre-installed in all of our Android devices and aggregates the best and most popular apps from around the world, providing an easy-to-understand, one-stop shop for our Smartphone customers.
Many international Android developers understand the importance of the Japanese market but they also recognize the difficulties created by the language and cultural differences. NTT DOCOMO USA has played a very active role in helping international developers reach the Japanese market. The materials in this section are another effort to explain the achievements and potential of Android in Japan in general and NTT DOCOMO in particular.
The summer 2011 lineup of DOCOMO features eight Android smartphones from a variety of vendors – LG, NEC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp and Sony Ericsson. All these models ship with Gingerbread.
Smartphones sales at DOCOMO are growing fast. In 2010, DOCOMO sold 2.52 million units, representing 13% of the total sales and this number is expected to grow to 6 million in 2011.
