DOCOMO’s ATAKU® Channel To Expand Manga Options For U.S. Cell Phones

New York, March 22, 2010 – NTT DOCOMO USA, Inc. will unveil both new mobile manga content and a new manga format at the upcoming International CTIA WIRELESS 2010.

Developed by Voyager Japan, Inc., this new format involves streaming video in displaying content. DOCOMO USA will demonstrate these new offerings at the NTT DOCOMO booth at International CTIA WIRELESS 2010 in Las Vegas, March 23 to 25.

DOCOMO USA has plans for trial broadcasting of this content in spring 2010 via the ATAKU® Channel, DOCOMO USA’s mobile anime channel for US-based fans of Japanese anime.

Unlike conventional mobile phone manga shown panel by panel, this new streaming format presents manga that progresses in anticipation of the reader. It also features sound and narration. Production of this new product is easier than panel-by-panel mobile manga and can be broadcast “as is” by ATAKU® Channel, which is a video platform. Also, compared to our anime offerings up to now, these new options have advantages such as a richer pool of original content and ease of language translation.

At CTIA, DOCOMO USA will showcase Manga content originally published by KODANSHA Ltd. and Leed Publishing Co., Ltd.

Operated by DOCOMO USA, ATAKU® Channel has been broadcasting English-language versions of Japanese anime in the U.S. since 2006 through the mobile TV platform of MobiTV, Inc. DOCOMO USA hopes to increase the popularity of ATAKU® Channel with the addition of these new options.

DOCOMO USA will always look for new and creative ways to provide more program offerings for the enjoyment of American fans of Japanese anime and manga.
